At home hormone testing

We carry at home hormone testing kits. You collect the sample at home and send it directly to the laboratory. The laboratory's physicians review the results and send a copy to the pharmacy. You then come in and sit down with a pharmacist to go through the report together, before a written recommendation is sent to your prescriber.

The kit is purchased separately. The appointment to go through your results is part of the $150 consultation, not an extra charge.

Testing is optional and does not require a prescription to purchase. If you already have lab work from your prescriber, bring it instead. Any decision to begin, stop, or change any therapy is made by your prescriber.

There is no single best form; it depends on which hormone, what dose, and how your body handles it, and your prescriber chooses. Broadly: creams and gels are applied to the skin, troches dissolve in the mouth, capsules are swallowed, and vaginal preparations act locally. We prepare all of these and are glad to discuss the practical differences with your provider.

A troche is a small lozenge that dissolves in the mouth rather than being swallowed, usually held between the cheek and gum. Follow your label for how long to hold it and how often to use it. Do not chew or swallow it whole unless your prescriber tells you to, because that changes how the dose is absorbed.

Apply it where your prescriber directed, and yes, the location matters. Absorption differs between areas of skin, so changing where you apply it can change your effective dose. Yes, and it is worth taking seriously. Skin-to-skin contact at the application site can transfer hormone to another person, including children, and to pets. Bi-Est is a compounded combination of two estrogens, estradiol and estriol, in a ratio your prescriber specifies. A plain estradiol preparation contains one. Which is appropriate for you, and in what ratio, is entirely your prescriber's decision. We prepare what is written and do not recommend one over the other.

Mainly how they are given and how often. A cream is applied on a schedule your prescriber sets, an injection is given at intervals, and a pellet is inserted by a provider rather than used at home. We compound creams and provide other forms on prescription. How long any of them lasts, and which suits you, is your prescriber's decision.
